Apostle John stating the understanding or conclusion
of the Jewish listeners of the Lord Jesus
“For this reason the Jews
were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath,
but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.”
(John 5:18)
1st of all. Nowhere in the New
Testament that Lord Jesus Christ introduced himself equal to the Father. Jesus
is clear in his teaching that the FATHER is GREATER than him (John
10:29, John 14:28).
2nd. John is quoting the interpretation and
conclusion of the Jews that “Jesus is breaking the Sabbath and he was calling
God his own Father” which is according to the Jews “he is making himself equal
to God” (John 5:18).
If calling God “FATHER” means “equal to god”,
then the Jews are also making themselves equal to God for they also called God
their “ONLY FATHER",
“...We are not illegitimate children,” they protested.
“THE ONLY FATHER WE HAVE IS GOD HIMSELF.” (John 8:41).
The Jews are
contradicting their statement on John 5:18, unless they insist that they are
also Gods which is according to their definition “calling God ‘FATHER’ means
equal to god”.
In fact, even our Lord Jesus Christ encourage us
to call God “FATHER” and even the Apostles called God “FATHER”
"In this manner, therefore, pray: Our FATHER
in Heaven, HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME" (Matthew 6:9)
"ONE GOD AND FATHER of all who is over all and
through all and in all."(Ephesians 4:6)
3rd. And if breaking Sabbath means equal to God,
Then the Apostles who breaks Sabbath (Luke 6:1-5, Matthew 12:1-2) are also
equal to God? King David and his brethren who breaks Sabbath (Matthew 12:3-4)
are also equal to God? Apostle Paul stated that it is ok not to observe Sabbath
anymore (Colossians 2:16), does that mean that he is teaching that we are
equal to God too? Most people today did not observe Sabbath anymore, does that
mean that we are equal to God?
Regarding Sabbath, Sabbath is no longer in effect
during Jesus’s times. The Law of Moses and the writings of the prophets
were in effect only up to the time of John the Baptist (Luke 16:16). In fact, even
during the time of the Israelite, God had put an end to the observance of
Sabbath and caused it to be forgotten (Hosea 2:11, RSV, Lamentation 2:6, NKJV).
That’s why Apostle teaches it is ok not to observe Sabbath anymore (Colossians
2:16). And the Jews are ignorant about these.
4th. Jesus corrected the ignorance of the Jews on
John 5:18. As Jesus said “Very truly I tell you, the SON CAN DO NOTHING BY
HIMSELF; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the
Father does the Son also does”(John 5:19). Jesus can do nothing by himself
which is clear that the FATHER is greater than Jesus because Jesus CAN ONLY DO
whatever he sees his FATHER doing. It means, Jesus CANNOT WORK on his own
without the FATHER, because the FATHER is the one that sent him and is greater
than Jesus.
But instead for the Trinitarians to side our Lord
Jesus Christ, they chose to side the erroneous and false conclusion of the Jews
that “he(Jesus) is making himself equal to God” (John 5:18), which is never and
not a statement of our Lord Jesus Christ, for Jesus is clear in his teaching
that the FATHER is greater than him(Christ) (John 10:29, JOHN 14:28). But Trinitarians keep on ignoring these verses in
order to promote their erroneous and false doctrine “Jesus is God”.
And how can Jesus be a God if he attested that
the FATHER is the ONLY TRUE GOD
“After
Jesus said these things, he looked toward heaven and prayed, “Father, the time
has come. Give glory to your Son so that the Son can give glory to you. And
this is eternal life: that people can know YOU(FATHER), THE ONLY TRUE GOD, and
that they can know Jesus Christ, the one you(FATHER) sent.” (John 17:1&3,
ERV)
Which is one: “Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE
LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD”(Mark 11:29 a quotation of Deuteronomy 6:4)
Which is the LORD of Heaven and Earth: “At that
time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, LORD of heaven and earth” (Matt.
11:25, Luke 10:21)
